Rice MBA
| Rice afforded me the opportunity to get my MBA at a
respected, nationally ranked business school without leaving
Houston. The best thing about choosing Rice was the chance to be at
the Jones School during a pivotal time. I was there while it was
climbing up the rankings and improving its reputation, and I was able to
put my own stamp on the program. |
| I concentrated my MBA studies on marketing, but
complimented traditional marketing with quantitative skills in
market research, data analysis, market modeling and
finance.
My second year I held an elected office in the Rice Marketing
Club. This gave me the chance to market Rice marketing
students to the business community, bring marketing to the attention
of in-coming and prospective students, and work with the
administration to develop the school's marketing curriculum.
As a Marketing Club Officer, I assembled and hosted a marketing
panel event, supervised the Marketing Club's annual resume book, and
participated in our award-winning case competition team.
One of the unique aspects of the Rice MBA experience is called
The Action Learning Program, or ALP. Rice MBA candidates spend
their second semester in student teams working as consultants on a
business problem submitted by actual companies. This project
becomes an "internship before your internship", and builds
valuable real world experience early in the MBA program. I
chose a project at Compaq Computer Corporation, designing online
marketing tools and performing business-to-business consumer
research for Compaq's server solutions marketing group. |

I also interned at Compaq during the summer of 2001, between my first
and second years. For my internship, I was working in the iPAQ
handheld PC wireless solutions marketing department. This was an
exciting opportunity to learn about great technologies in the areas of
computers, wireless communications, and consumer electronics.
During my final semester at Rice I worked part time in Pennzoil-Quaker
State's Consumer and Market Insights department. This exciting
experience allowed me to assume a lot of responsibility in areas of
quantitative and syndicated market research information.
Fortunately, I was able to secure a full time position in the same
department upon graduation. |
University of Houston Undergraduate
I began my undergraduate career in 1993. I chose the
University of Houston almost entirely because of its prestigious Hotel and
Restaurant Management program, and my plans to become a chef. While
my dreams of culinary greatness eventually faded, I enjoyed the program,
and found it to be an excellent general business education.

While at UH, I was also a member of The Honors
College. This gave me access to special classes, more
challenging course loads, and the opportunity to write an
undergraduate thesis my senior year. My thesis, inspired by
the Hilton College's wine appreciation class, was an
examination of restaurant wine pricing schemes. I also completed a minor in religious studies at UH. This
was an excellent opportunity to balance my business education with
deeply personal interests in Judaism, philosophy and world
religions. I encountered some of my favorite classes and
professors of my undergraduate experience through the UH
Religious Studies program. Other fond memories I have from my
time at UH include two years in the Cougar Marching Band's drum
line, three fun-filled years in the dorms, and the many friends with
whom I still keep in touch. |
